Chapter Nine

Lily’s words echoed through my head, pushing me to Jesse’s faster and faster. I ran up the stairs and knocked before I entered.

“How was the day before wedding breakfast?” Jesse sat on the stool at the island, peeling another mandarin.

“It was good.”

“Did you tell her about what dissolved between you and your ex?”

“I wanted to.” I reached for an orange as the citrusy scent was too hard to pass up. “But no. It’s too big to dump on her just yet.”

Jesse rose and tossed his peel into the trash. “Eat up. We have some places to visit.”

He popped the remaining pieces into his mouth and chewed.

I dumped my single peel into the tissue paper, and pulled apart the orange into its segments, eating one at a time. “What’s the plan?”

“You’ll see.” There was a twinkle in his eye. “But nothing that hurts, as I know you have a big day tomorrow.” He winked for good measure. “How long has it been since you’ve been here for Christmas?”

“Just that one year.”

His head bobbed, and he gave his chin a thoughtful rub. “That’s what I suspected. So, you’ve never really been here in the wintertime?”

I shook my head, little pangs of nervous energy building deep inside. However, I was more curious than scared, excited to see what was planned. I popped the last segment into my mouth. “Ready.”

“Wear a warm jacket and mitts.”

We were going to be outside, which was fine by me. The sun was starting to peek out from behind the clouds and with the heat, the nip in the air was long gone.

“Let’s go.” Jesse put on his baseball cap and woolly jean jacket, the keys to his truck jingling from his fingers.
